We are announcing an international architectural competition
Following the completion of preparatory work, expert surveys, and formulation of the brief, we are ready to announce an international architectural competition. Its objective is to find a design that will restore the unique industrial heritage of the former sugar factory, make the historic buildings accessible to the public, create quality public spaces, and transform the complex into a vibrant urban quarter.

We will preserve all historic buildings and restore the 19th-century retention basin
The complex consists primarily of heritage-protected buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, we decided to extend the inventory of valuable elements to include younger structures without heritage protection and preserve all buildings constructed in the 20th century. During the surveys, we successfully documented the entire system of underground spaces, including an extensive historic canal that once connected Mlynský potok with Trnávka. Our ambition is to restore this unique water management system and use it to retain rainwater from the entire area. This will create the largest historic retention basin of its kind, contributing to cooling the area, improving the microclimate, and sustainable rainwater management.

We have completed the preparation of documents mapping the site
After more than a year of work, we have completed a comprehensive inventory of the valuable elements of the entire site. The result is hundreds of pages of expert documentation that will serve as the foundation for the restoration and new use of the historical buildings. The process included architectural-historical research, structural-technical and static surveys, an inventory of architectural details, historical research of the area, technology mapping, an expert participatory process, and other specialized analyses. Thanks to these, we now understand the site to an unprecedented degree.

A multidisciplinary working group has been established
A multidisciplinary team of experts is collaborating on preparing the brief for the regeneration of national cultural monuments as well as the other buildings. It comprises architects, architectural historians, structural engineers, heritage restoration specialists, urban planners, landscape architects, cultural managers, anthropologists, and other specialists. Together, they are creating an expert framework that will shape the future of one of Slovakia’s most significant industrial heritage sites and ensure that its regeneration respects its historic values while also delivering high-quality urban life.
